Organization / entity markup with sameAs and consistent brand identity
Organization schema helps Google understand and disambiguate the brand. Treat it as hygiene: no study shows it raises AI citations, and Bing schema-for-understanding is not citation lift.
Little/no measured citation lift, only thin support, or a mechanism without outcome data.
Plausible mechanism, no outcome data.
How to fix
Add markup that says who you are. Google says it helps it understand your name, logo and profiles; no study we trust shows it gets you quoted by AI agents. Treat it as cheap housekeeping.
-
Add one
Organizationblock in JSON-LD (structured data in your page code) to your homepage. UseLocalBusinessif people visit your office or shop. -
Fill in your real name, URL and logo, and list your official profiles in
sameAs:<script type="application/ld+json"> {"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Organization", "name":"Acme Payroll","url":"https://www.example.com", "logo":"https://www.example.com/logo.png", "sameAs":["https://www.linkedin.com/company/example","https://x.com/example"]} </script> -
Use the same name, address and profile links everywhere.
-
Test it with Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator.
How to check it worked: run the free check again. The "Business details markup" row reads "Your markup says who you are. Good housekeeping, not proven to get you quoted."
What the free check looks for
- Parse Organization/LocalBusiness JSON-LD on homepage; check name, url, logo, sameAs count; compare brand name consistency across <title>, og:site_name, schema name and footer legal name.
Caveats
- — Correlational studies dominate this field. AI citations churn: a small 15-prompt preprint (arXiv 2609.22655; the author sells AI-visibility tooling) saw each engine's cited URL set change by about 67% on average from one day to the next, with under 1% URL overlap across engines. Toronto (2610.15033) found only about 40% of the within-site pattern of ChatGPT citations still held two weeks later, and 14% after ten weeks. Re-verify yearly.
- — Hygiene only — reported as info, not graded in the free check.
Studies and docs
2025
Google: Organization markup can help it better understand your organization's administrative details and disambiguate it in search results (logo, sameAs, contact). A Google Search feature, not an AI citation signal.
2025
1,508 German real-estate agents: sites with FAQPage or Product schema were more often known to ChatGPT (odds ratio ≈13 and ≈4, logistic regression). Correlational, single-author, measures whether ChatGPT knows the business rather than citations; not replicated.
2025
Vendor statement that Bing uses schema to help Copilot/LLMs understand content. Understanding is not citation lift; no outcome data.
2026
Matched before/after (difference-in-differences) study of 1,885 already-cited pages that added schema: no meaningful AI citation uplift (AI Overviews −4.6%, significant; AI Mode +2.4% and ChatGPT +2.2%, not significant). Observational, not a randomized test. Hygiene, not a citation boost. Do not claim schema → 3× citations.
