Visible, machine-readable publish/updated dates and genuinely fresh content
AI-cited URLs are fresher on average than Google's organic results (most for ChatGPT), but within a site page age was not a consistent predictor. Show true dates; don't treat freshness as a sure lever.
Real evidence that depends on platform/context, or sources conflict.
Mixed. Ahrefs' 17M-citation finding is correlational and measures age by first-seen date; Toronto (2610.15033) found page age was not consistently selected within a site. Keep true dates visible; do not fake freshness.
How to fix
Show a true, labelled date AI agents can read. The evidence is Mixed, but it's cheap hygiene. Faking freshness is not a fix.
-
Show a labelled date on the page, like "Last updated 20 October 2026". Google recommends this.
-
Wrap it in a
<time>tag:<p>Last updated <time datetime="2026-10-20">20 October 2026</time></p> -
For articles, add
datePublishedanddateModifiedto your Article markup (the JSON-LD block in your page code). The free check also readsarticle:published_timeandarticle:modified_timemeta tags.<script type="application/ld+json"> {"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Article","headline":"Your headline", "datePublished":"2026-03-03","dateModified":"2026-10-20"} </script> -
Change the date only when you really change the content. Review and update old pages that still matter.
How to check it worked: run the free check again. The "Your page shows when it was updated" row should pass: "Your page has a date AI agents can read, from the last 12 months."
What the free check looks for
- Extract datePublished/dateModified from JSON-LD, <time>, meta (article:modified_time), visible text and Last-Modified header; flag missing dates, mismatches between them, and dateModified older than ~12 months for time-sensitive topics.
Caveats
- — Correlational studies dominate this field. AI citations churn: a small 15-prompt preprint (arXiv 2609.22655; the author sells AI-visibility tooling) saw each engine's cited URL set change by about 67% on average from one day to the next, with under 1% URL overlap across engines. Toronto (2610.15033) found only about 40% of the within-site pattern of ChatGPT citations still held two weeks later, and 14% after ten weeks. Re-verify yearly.

Studies and docs
2025
Across ~17M citations, AI-cited URLs averaged 1,064 days old vs 1,432 for organic results (25.7% fresher); ChatGPT most freshness-biased, AI Overviews least. Correlational; age is Ahrefs' first-seen date.
2026
Within a site, older pages were cited somewhat less (about −5% per standard deviation of age), but age was not consistently selected across robustness tests.
