Cite authoritative sources, add statistics and expert quotations

Adding citations to credible sources, concrete statistics and quotations can help in some lab settings; real-world rewrite tests are mixed.

Real evidence that depends on platform/context, or sources conflict.

Mixed. Princeton GEO measured lifts on position-adjusted word count in a lab engine reading five fixed Google results, and rank-1 sources lost visibility; C-SEO Bench found most rewrite methods ineffective or harmful. Do it because it makes the page more trustworthy, not as a citation boost.

How to fix

Back up key claims with sources, real numbers and named quotes. The evidence is Mixed and mostly from lab tests, but it's good writing anyway. Don't add numbers or quotes just to pass.

  1. Link each key claim to its original source, such as a government body, standards body or published study (.gov, .edu, europa.eu, who.int, oecd.org, arxiv.org, doi.org). Links to your own site don't count.
  2. Add at least three real numbers (prices, counts, dates, results), each with its context.
  3. Quote a named person, such as a client, expert or your founder, with their name and role.
  4. Include any two of the three: a trusted-source link, three or more numbers, or a quote. That's what the check passes on.

How to check it worked: run the free check again. The "Your claims are backed up" row should pass: "Your page has numbers, quotes or links to trusted sources."

What the free check looks for

  • Link claims to their primary sources (studies, official docs, public data).
  • Use real statistics with a source and date, and quote named people accurately.
  • The free check counts outbound links to authoritative domains, numbers and quotes — a rough proxy that only warns.
  • AutoGEO (arXiv 2510.11438) is a GEO-methods paper, not a free-check signal.

Caveats

  • — Correlational studies dominate this field. AI citations churn: a small 15-prompt preprint (arXiv 2609.22655; the author sells AI-visibility tooling) saw each engine's cited URL set change by about 67% on average from one day to the next, with under 1% URL overlap across engines. Toronto (2610.15033) found only about 40% of the within-site pattern of ChatGPT citations still held two weeks later, and 14% after ten weeks. Re-verify yearly.

Studies and docs

2024

Adding citations, quotations and statistics lifted source visibility up to ~40% on GEO-bench position-adjusted word count, in a GPT-3.5 lab engine reading the top five Google results — not a ChatGPT citation rate. Rank-1 sources lost ~30% with Cite Sources.

2023

Human audit of four generative search engines (2023): on average only 51.5% of generated sentences were fully supported by their citations, and 74.5% of citations supported their sentence. Shows engines cite loosely; it does not test whether citing sources on your page earns citations.

2025

Extracts engine preference rules (e.g., authoritative, well-structured, factual content) and shows rule-guided rewrites raise visibility.

2025

Most conversational-SEO rewriting methods were ineffective or harmful; classic SEO that lifts retrieval rank worked.
